Staying in Touch as a Post Grad

Over the years, we have all developed many friendships and maybe some have even disappeared. There will also come a time when you realize who is there for you in the good and bad times. While in college, others have time to learn from mistakes and mature as we get more into our adult years. Away at school, you learn to live on your own and grow as a young adult. You also get to meet so many different types of people whether it being in a sorority, fraternity or just other organizations on campus.

For me, I had met some of my best friends throughout those years. Luckily, I was also in a sorority so I had 200 sisters to have a shoulder to cry on or just dinner any night at the house. Majority of my friends have been with me at my best and worst. I am so grateful to have met each and every one of them.

Not all friendships are meant to last. I did have a huge falling out with one of my best friends since high school and even throughout college. Of course this huge fight had to happen when one of us was intoxicated. Anyways, it ended on horrible terms and till this day, we have not spoken to each other. It is sad how a friendship can disappear after so long. But then you realize everyone’s true colors in the relationship. This one was just not a healthy one to be in.

But onto keeping friends who have been there for you, here are some pointers. Although, staying in touch can be tough to do in our busy schedules on a day to day basis. Most of us live in different cities for jobs, grad school, law school, and the list goes on. One of the best ways to meet up after several years of not seeing each other can be a trip that’s convenient for the whole group. I actually made a trip to Orlando for SeaWorld not too long ago to see a couple of my best friends. Even though some of us can talk every day to one another, it never beats reminiscing in person.

Everyday, I miss being away in Tallahassee when I could see friends at any time since we were all in the same city. It was so easy to call each other up and ask if they wanted to go see a movie or go out for a drink. Now, the questions were all asking are when we are free to skype, facetime or a getaway. But there’s always football season, where majority of people go up for tailgates, cold beer at 9am and frolicking around campus like freshman.

Stay in touch with those you care about and have a chipper relationship and not one that is dragging you down. It doesn’t even have to be through social media to keep in touch. Just sending a text, calling on the phone, or even an actual letter is more meaningful instead of blowing up someone’s “wall.” It’s been almost two years since I’ve graduated and I still have the same friends from FSU and even high school. Once you get to this point, you’ll be able to see how easy it is to talk to your friends on a daily basis. Maybe one day, they will be your bridesmaids!
